Go West

Perth CBD · Inland Western Australia

June 2026

I finally made it to WA. Not that I got to see much beyond the internals of city offices, pubs and machinery sheds in the Wheatbelt. But one morning I managed to liberate a company ute from the carpark. Up at 5am, out to pay my respects to the shrines of BHP, Fortescue and Rio Tinto in Perth’s CBD. Then back to the hotel, collect the crew, and beeline east for the client run.

And I especially enjoyed watching the inland landscape unfold from my cramped window seat on the flight to and fro — the Australian heartland shifting colour below, river systems tracing old decisions through country that doesn’t rush for anyone.

I’ve spent most of the weekend horizontal, catching up from the rush and the four hours I averaged a night during the week. The heartland doesn’t rush for anyone. Eventually, it seems, neither can I.
